LYSB Staff has developed fun summer programs, both in person and virtual, for children and families.  We are strictly limiting registration numbers in order to ensure physical distancing.  To learn about LYSB’s COVID protocols, please scroll to the bottom of this page.

Wednesdays, June 30 to August 18, 2021, 8:30 to 10:30 a.m.

For girls entering grades 3-6, free.
Join us for a summer of running while building self-esteem, inspiration, goal setting, leadership, courage, and more! Coached by Alli Behnke, MSW (and fellow runner!), with LOLHS mentors.

At White Sands Beach
This is a free event. Bring your own picnic, beach chairs and blankets and get ready for some good ol’ fashioned family fun. Social distancing measures will be taken on the beach, masks required. Registration not required.


Monday, July 26 to Thursday, July 29, 11:00 a.m. to 1:00 p.m.

An intense sitter safety and training course appropriate for babysitters, big brothers and sisters, and children staying home alone for the first time. This course touches on a variety of safety skills such as basic first aid, fire safety, and 911 skills. Fee is $50 and includes supplies, snacks, and guest speakers.


Monday, July 26 to Thursday, July 29, 1:30 to 3:00 p.m.

For students entering grades 5 to 8
Have you ever wanted to make your own jewelry? In this class, we will explore basic jewelry techniques and wireworking skills, such as wrapping, forming and hammering. Using a variety of tools, beads, copper wire, and silver-plated wire, we will create 4-6 jewelry projects, including pendants, bracelets, and rings. Each student will be able to take home their tools at the end of the session, so they can continue crafting jewelry at home. Led by artisan silversmith Michaelle Pearson.
(*Note: students with a Copper or Nickel allergy should not take this class)
Fee: $125, including all supplies and toolkit to keep. Scholarships available.

Thursday, July 29, 6:00-8:00 p.m.

At White Sands Beach
A free family event with hula hoop tricks and entertainment!! Participants will learn basic waist hooping, tricks, on and off body moves. Custom made hula hoops will be available for use and we welcome all ages to participate. Musically fueled interactive Hoop Dancing (hula hooping) entertainment designed to inspire and ignite creative movement, dance, exercise, self expression and cooperative play. Registration not required.


Friday, July 30, 11:00 a.m. to 12:30 p.m.

Add this valuable class to your LYSB babysitter’s course and learn how to save a life! Learn CPR and how to clear a blocked airway in children and infants. Parents want to hire babysitters who know CPR and can help kids who are choking. Instructors will teach you everything you need to know to provide lifesaving care during a cardiac or choking emergency in this class. Class cost is $55 and awards a Certificate of Completion. Scholarships available.


Monday, August 2 to Friday, August 6, 12:00-3:00 p.m.

For students entering grades 7-9. Discover the marvelous and spectacular world of engineering through the hands-on, minds on summer camps offered by Engineering Imagination, LLC! In these exciting, educational summer camps, participants will use a variety of mediums such as LEGO, recycled materials, salvaged motors and gears, balsa wood, and more to explore the STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering, Mathematics) curriculum. Using the different mediums, participants will learn about and build projects such as hydroelectric waterwheels, model rockets, and scale bridges! With activities focused on green engineering, mechanical engineering, chemical engineering, and architecture, your child is sure to have a blast while learning along the way! Fee: $175. Scholarships Available.

Monday, August 2, 10-11:00 a.m.,

Ages 2-6, $5 per person
Create a volcano eruption with plastic dinosaurs that turns into a fun slime to play with.


Tuesdays & Thursdays, August 3 to 17, 5:00-7:00 p.m.

Select up to three private 20  minute appointments. LYSB is partnering with our friends at Project Paws, The Tim Buckley Project to provide opportunities for children grades K-5 to read to a therapy dog during a series of three private appointments. Reading to a trained therapy dog can improve reading skills and confidence, and motivate children to read more at home. It can also reduce the stress and anxiety some children feel when asked to read aloud in class. This program will be held outside if possible, or inside in case of rain.  Bring your own reading materials, and a blanket or towel to sit on. To learn more about Project Paws click here.

READY, SET, EXPLORE with Denison Pequotsepos Nature Center

Two Tuesdays, August 3 & 10, 10:30 a.m. to 12:00 noon

Ages grades 1 and up, fee $10 per child
We will meet at the beautiful McCulloch Family Open Space on Whippoorwill Road in Old Lyme. You will learn all about insects and pond animals while safely capturing (and releasing) as many species as you can find! will you can search for bluebirds in the meadow, painted turtles or bullfrogs in the pond, admire our summer wildflower garden or simply enjoy a peaceful walk in the woods. Week one: Insects, Week two: Aquatic pond species.

Wednesday, August 4, 5:00-7:00 p.m.

Behind LYSB on the middle school driveway. Spend the evening exploring vehicles of all kinds from dump trucks to fire trucks, construction vehicles and big rigs.  Music, Del’s Lemonade, and Fun!! Free and open to the public.


Thursday, August 5, 1:00-3:30 p.m.

Ages 6 and up. All children must be accompanied by an adult. LYSB will not be providing transportation.
Location: Project O 1084 Shennecossett Road, Groton CT
Price: $10 per person
LYSB has a limited number of tickets for the Project Oceanology Oceanographic Cruise. Explore the sea life in Long Island Sound and learn how to use a wide range of oceanographic equipment as part of our flagship environmental monitoring program aboard the Enviro-Lab research vessel. The Enviro-Lab has plenty of space on deck for optimal viewing and is equipped with cabins and a restroom. This is a 2.5 hr cruise. Please dress in layers as it can be cooler (and possibly wet) on the boat than on land.

For entering K-2nd grade. Siblings welcome. $5.00 per child.
Interactive story theatre comes to life!
A children’s theatre adventure and journey into the world of a story. WATCH the story unfold or ACT IT OUT with Amy Forbes, Treehouse Players’ founder. Using improvisation, dramatic play, music and movement, Amy guides both players and observers, encouraging everyone to use their voices and bring the story to life. Calling all incoming kindergarteners!!!! Come to Mile Creek and Lyme Schools to meet your new Principal, and see other families and friends. LYSB will have some fun activities on the school playground, stories with the Principal, and more. LYSB will host one date at each school. More info coming soon. (Note, we will not be visiting classrooms or meeting kindergarten teachers at this event)

COVID Protocols at LYSB

For LYSB’s in person programs, COVID19 protocols will be followed. All programs have limited space available to ensure our enrollment numbers allow for physical distancing to be followed. All surfaces are disinfected daily after each class. We ask all participants to wear masks (if over 2 years old) and follow the guidelines and any signs for distancing during the class, as directed by the instructor.

If you are anyone in your family has had any of the following symptoms DO NOT attend the class

• Fever within the last 48 hours
• Shortness in breath or difficulty breathing
• Chills
• Sore throat
• Cough
• Been around someone who has COVID-19
